For any folks living in America, my short video (Jingalong) that I did for "Yo Gabba Gabba" is debuting on Tuesday, August 28 at 10:30 am on Nickelodeon.
Hey Nick, I got my WAIF disc and enjoyed it (and the extras) very much. My first thought was "this is like Jim Tyer meets Guy Madin" (i'm a fan of both) -- very refreshing to see cartoon used to tell an unconventional story this way. Lots of subtlety in the color, design and direction.
Thanks!!
PS. I will look for KITES ARE FUN. That was the title of an airy-fairy pop song in the late sixties. Is there a connection?
Whoa. Wish I had cable so I could see this. Hopefully it'll make it's way to the internet.
Hey Nick, do you freelance a whole bunch to finance your old films, or what? I kinda wanna know what your business model is, because you're producing a lot of your own stuff (which is what I wanna ultimately do).
I'm glad you got the DVD(finally). Yes, Kites are Fun is the same song as the 60's version by "The Free Design" The song they used in the show is a cover by The Parallelograms.
Thanks David
Hi Sean, I think we are cursed here in Canada, even with cable we still wouldn't be able to see this show...it so far is only airing on Nickelodeon.
Hi Chris, I do a lot of freelance work, my films don't pay for themselves so I have to self-finance them that way. I really envy those fortunate few that can do their own stuff and make a living from it, but alas I as yet am not one of them.
rex told me you got a gig on the show- congratulations. the show looks cool and weird and i'm sure your cartoon is excellent. i've enjoyed the waif very much.
Hey Nick, great piece on Yo Gabba Gabba. I found your blog after googling for the song, because my 21 month old son is captivated by your animation and the music. He'll watch it and dance around in the living room, I can't tell you how many times we've had to replay that part (thank goodness for TiVo).
I really enjoyed Waif of Persephone, and it inspired me to make my own short film.
I'm curious though, what type of scanner are you using to scan in the artwork? Large format scanners seem to be pretty expensive, unless I buy an older model off ebay.
Thanks Joel! I really wish I could see some of your cartoons...maybe one day.
Hi Nick, That's amazing! I'm glad your son likes it!
Jay...I just use a regular-sized flatbed scanner with an 8 1/2 x 14 scan surface. The trick is to not do any artwork larger than a 10fld and registered low so that it fits all in one scan.
This is my sons' knew favorite show. They love it, I've already heard "There's a party in my tummy" more times than I care to. I'm sure I'll get to see your short plenty of times. I'm looking forward to it.

Hey Nick, slightly off topic…
