Here's the first scene of "Yellow Cake" with finished animation...{Click Here}
The bg is still rough and the fire in the oven is not final. But apart from that it's done. I did this entire scene in Flash. I am going to animate the entire short film this way. This scene took me a day to animate, but I'm still not 100% sure that it was any faster than if I had animated it on paper...I think there must be a middle ground that I have yet to discover...
Anyway, I'll have more to show soon I hope.

looks great so far! I think you'll do just fine using flash alone. It's also just the beginning of animation. I'm sure you'll speed up once it gets rolling. Can't wait to see more!
Wow, that was smoooth! What's Yellow Cake about?
Cool. Is this one going to be in HD? I noticed the wider aspect ratio.
Thanks!
Sean: I hope it'll go faster with flash, i figure it'll cut out all the scanning and streamlining time so over the course of the whole film it'll make a difference.
William: I'm not revealing the story quite yet...you have to wait and see!
Brian:This one is going to be widescreen but I don't know about HD....is it worth it?
Well it's hard to say if it's worth it. Even though I have an HD TV now all my HD content is coming from my cable provider. HD-DVD and Blueray are still battling it out on the next gen DVD format. Otherwise I'm just watching regular DVD's scaled up and filtered through my Pioneer DVD player... which still looks pretty good.
You'd have to scan all your backgrounds at a higher res and render out two different versions of your movie. That'd probably be a pain in the ass.
holy shit, man! That looks great the way it is, actually. What about leaving the bg's as rough? I think it adds to the rustic appeal that's so popular nowadays.
I can't wait to see more! As soon as my next cheque rolls in, you're getting a donation, my friend.
That looks amazing. These teasers and stuff are going to make me really impatient to see this as a whole.
Great stuff.
Awesome Nick, your making me drool already. Lots of character in that lil guy.
Hey that's great! Fantastically cute.
love the character you put into his turns...beautimus.
The clip doesn't work for me...
the "Waif of Persephone" sequence neither :(
The only thing I get is a broken QT logo...
I need help!???
Do I need a special/newer version of QT... or a certain codec...
THANKS.
cant wait to see it!
Thanks!
I've actually gone back into this scene and tweaked it a little bit...it's better now I think
Ben: You most likely need the newest version of QuickTime...probably version 7. Sorry about that...it's all Apple's fault
I like the perspective pivot with the foot.
That's funny!
Will you make promotional Yellow Cakes when it's done.
And if so can I order one.
Perhaps you could put the DVD's inside them... just like that crazy cake the Little Rascals made where it would inflate and make noises that went "wwwwwwWWHOOOOOAH!"
Just an idea.
I also like the treatment of the bg's reminds me of old school Disney.
bye.
Oh, this is sooo sweet. Great, rich background!!
FBF, it probably ISN't any faster than doing it on paper, except that, eventually, you do have a such an easy-to-access library and there's something to accepting the subtle difference in your "vocabulary" when you draw straight to the tablet. That sort of speeds things up. Eventually. :)
Blah blah blah.
What DVD authoring software did you use?
I use DVD Studio Pro...I'm not sure which version but I think it's the latest one.
Hey Nick, I got my copy of Waif the other day - kudos on the amazing accomplishment. Any chance of getting copies of Tea for Two, U-Girl or The Red Scarf out anytime soon?
Congrats again.
Really nice!!! :D
that little chef dude is adorable. you just wanna hug it until its head rockets off its neck!
haha, nice! the bg is great. i like how he swings his feet around when he walks. thats really cool. keep up the great work. this is going to be a winner.
Hey Nick,
Thanx for adding me to your linx section (trust me,I need the traffic!). I'll have to upgrade my movieplayer and check out that new cake your baking. Looks yellummy. So what happened to that comic you and Kristy were drawing( Keep Smiling)? Those were great too. Hopefully your just revamping the site ( unless of course...you killed her and now your just trying to cover your tracks by deleting the site - oh you are a Krafty one). I'll be keeping an eye on you.
Quality animation, nick.
You always bring it!
Wonderful perspective and even better colors!
Terrific!
Great animation. Very expressive in his pivots... love the foot haha. He looks kinda bored but putting little "swaggers" in his routine (like just turning around... making it more "interesting" to him by swinging his leg around -- like what a kid does) to make the day go bye better. I love it!!
As far as HD... if you're animating in Flash (vector art) then you can export at any definition you want (as long as the aspect ratio is the same). But like he said, if you're doing your backgrounds in Photoshop or another Raster imaging program, you'll have to make those backgrounds in HD resolution since they can't be scaled up without loss of quality (informally... "pixilization"... dundun duuuuuuuuuuuunnnnn!).
I animate on paper frequently, but just because it's where I started and I get stubborn in my ways. Also... I like to be without electronic technology sometimes (on a nice day). But if you're animating FBF on a tablet, that excludes the need for scanning or picturing the ani-sheets into the computer. Plus if you make a mistake there's Undo and seamless erasing... so it does make things easier.
You can have a happy middle ground with animating FBF in Flash while using symbols too by (as someone else said) building up your library... but it doesn't seem like you're going to get much of a difference in workflow from what I see (style-wise). For something of the quality and feel you're going for, you probably don't want a lot of loops or repeating animations so you'll have to settle for symbolizing standard animations like short head turns, blinks, independent arm movements and the like.
Honestly though... a day to animate that is still pretty good, and thing's will get faster as you move along. The more you familiarize yourself with your characters' new "life", you'll start flying. But if you can't go any faster than you can't... no biggy. It's the end result that matters. Producers worry about release dates and time consumption... since you're your own producer -- give yourself a break! haha
It's looking great! I love the feeling of it! Really looking forward to seeing more!!
